Contextual Background
- Ramapo Green is a “brand” that was created some time before this entire initiative began.听 This brand, Ramapo Green, was usurped for an idea we had at the back of our mind–and that was to infuse sustainability as a way of thinking and as a “worldview” through every single choice that is made within the College.
- A committee at the College was established when the College signed on to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), in November 2007.听
- In 2010, the committee became the President’s Committee On Campus Sustainability (PCCS).
- This whole process grew into this听Ramapo Green website, and culminated in a very particular听articulation of what sustainability ought to mean.
Since its founding in 1969, Ramapo College of New Jersey has had a clear commitment to sustainability.听 As the world around us has come to realize the importance of renewable energy, pollution control, the elimination of waste and the adoption of “green practices,” we have renewed our commitment to sustainability.
With the opening of Ramapo College’s Sharp Sustainability Education Center, the establishment of sustainability as a fundamental principle, and the signing of , Ramapo College continues to dedicate itself to creating a more sustainable campus.

April 19, 2021Ramapo Green and 1STEP Screen The Sacrifice听Zone
On April 16 1STEP and Ramapo Green hosted a virtual screening of The Sacrifice Zone, a documentary on the work of the Ironbound Community Corporation to combat pollution in Newark from industrial sources. Melissa Miles who was featured in the documentary and currently serves as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance spoke to the audience afterwards. The documentary began with stunning visuals of Ironbound-Newark residents going about their daily activities while planes from Newark Liberty International Airport flew over an incineration plant emitting ominous smoke. March 20, 2021SGA Senate Unanimously Passes Divestment Task Force Bill
By Ben Hopper A new bill to create a divestment task force was passed by the Ramapo Student Government Association (SGA) on Monday, March 15. This bill, proposed by Secretary of Sustainability Zo毛 Tucker-Borrut and introduced by Senate Vice President Nicholas Bykov, passed unanimously with a vote of 17-0-0 in favor of it. Divestment is the act of shifting investments from going towards fossil fuels to being put towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives instead.
